Separate disposal units for food and household waste will appear in the courtyards of Astana in the next two years, Kazakh Minister of Environment and Water Resources Nurlan Kapparov believes.

Rubbish 251207"We will not make anybody sort garbage. People will themselves come to understand this. It is necessary to put urns in the yards for this purpose: separately for food and household waste, and then people will realize that the garbage should be divided. Some part of the population will understand this and will do so. Over the years, the share of environmentally conscious Kazakhs will grow,"the minister said at a press conference in Astana adding that it took 30 years in Europe.

"... we are in the beginning, and our citizens will soon be environmentally conscious ... After a couple of years universally separate collection systems will be established in Astana," he said.

The solid waste management market needs to become attractive for this system to work, according to the minister.

We have specified in the state program for solid waste management long-term agreements, and preferential tariffs- all of these will make the business attractive. It is important that garbage and landfill be in the same hands to avoid conflict of interest," Kapparov said.
